"My aim is to
make art that is beautiful and useful," says Karalyn Kavanaugh. She uses
exquisite art papers from around the world to craft her line of "Strings!"
note cards. Each of her cards is a small work of collage art. Every aspect
of the card production is by hand, with appreciation for the materials and
mindfulness of the process. The outside cover and inside blank page - with
space for a greeting - are cut and arranged by hand. They are attached and
tied by string or cord. The artist culls her extensive treasury of art papers - from oriental designs of rich reds and gold to textured, matte and translucent sheets. She cuts and arranges these papers to create a collage that is glued to the cover of each card. Her spare designs highlight the beauty of the papers. The cards are ideal for notes, greetings, love letters, party invitations, wedding and other announcements. They are pretty enough to be framed in groups and hung on a wall or used as décor on a party table. Karalyn chose the name
"Strings!" for her cards because she likes the idea of invisible strings that
connect those who craft the beautiful papers she uses to her own art, to
those who buy her cards, to those who receive them with their written
messages. "Strings" that go around the world. |
